General:
Perennial herb from a slender rhizome; stems numerous, slender, creeping, 10-40 cm long, mat-forming, rooting at the nodes, hairy.
Leaves:
Opposite, short-stalked, kidney-shaped in outline, about 0.5 cm long, slightly wider than long, blunt-toothed, squared-off at the base, hairy.
Flowers:
Inflorescence a terminal, open raceme of several to many stalked flowers solitary in the axils of alternate, nearly full-size leaves, the thread-like stalks 1-3 cm long, several times as long as the subtending leaves, downcurved in fruit; corollas pale lavender-blue, saucer-shaped, 10-15 mm across, irregularly 4-lobed, the lobes much longer than the short tube, the upper lobe largest, the lowest lobe narrower than the others; calyces 3-5 mm long, deeply 4-lobed, the lobes oblong; styles about 3 mm long; stamens 2.
Fruits:
Capsules, 3-4 mm long, plump, nearly globe-shaped, wider than long, notched at the tip, fringed with long hairs; seeds cup-shaped, about 1.5 mm long.

Habitat / Range

Moist grassy clearings and lawns in the lowland zone; rare in SW and SC BC; introduced from Asia.
